I’ve spent two decades building search and infrastructure for enterprises. Every technology cycle has a moment when it stops being a lab curiosity and becomes a CTO’s problem. With quantum computing, that moment landed in 2026 — and most companies still treat it like distant science fiction.
It isn’t. Google’s Willow chip held quantum coherence through AI optimization tasks (analyticsinsight.net) — the technical wall that had blocked the field for years, with error accumulating faster than correction could keep up, started giving way. And two independent analyses published in March 2026, one from Google Quantum AI and one from Oratomic, landed on the same uncomfortable conclusion: today’s cryptography could be broken before the decade is out (cliptics.com).
Why this isn’t headline alarmism
I’m not saying your password leaks next week. I’m saying “harvest now, decrypt later” — capturing encrypted data today to decrypt once quantum hardware catches up — stopped being an academic paper’s theory and became a line item on an adversary’s roadmap. When two organizations working at the edge of quantum computing, using different methodologies, land on the same time window, the security margin your company is assuming today deserves a second look.
The pattern that matters: hybrid, not replacement
The most practical detail in both analyses isn’t the date of the cryptographic reckoning — it’s the shape of the transition. The workflows emerging now are hybrid: quantum and classical working side by side, not one replacing the other overnight (aiworldjournal.com). That’s the pattern I’ve watched play out in every piece of mature infrastructure I’ve seen get built: you don’t swap the whole system the day new tech starts working, you integrate the new capability where it already solves a real problem, and migrate the rest on your own clock.
